NCYW Rules
Rules of the Mat ------------------------------- 1. Come to all practices—a wrestler who comes to half the practices will have great difficulty understanding the basics needed to compete in wrestling matches. Tell the coaches when you won’t be at practice. Miss two matches in same week …no match on Sunday. We want to start right on time –after arriving at practice (10 minutes early) immediately begin putting on your shoes and stretching on your own until a coach starts the practice. Each practice builds on the preceeding practices. If your son misses a few practices, he will fall behind.
2. No horseplay -- this is how many wrestlers get injured. No food or drinks (other than water). Toys or other non-wrestling items are not allowed. All wrestlers must bring water bottles with them.
3. Everyone is here to enjoy himself or herself. The following will not be tolerated and may be the basis for immediate removal from the team. Verbally or physically picking on another wrestler, behaving in an unsportsmanlike manner, using profanity or abusive language.
4. Wrestle hard, but NEVER intentionally try to injury anyone. When coaches talk, wrestlers must remain silent. Do what you’re told the first time asked; arguing with coaches will not be tolerated. NO pee-wees or bantams are allowed to help roll up mats after practice.
5. Practices are physically and mentally demanding. Each child's full attention is required for the duration of practices. Talking, playing, and generally distracting behavior during instruction and live wrestling periods will not be tolerated. Children who are not behaving properly will be warned twice. If there is a third occurence, they will be asked to leave the room for the remainder of the practice.
6. T-shirts and shorts (or singlet) are appropriate for practice; headgear must be worn during live wrestling and many choose to where it during drills as well. No street shoes (hard sole) on the mat (wrestling shoes are required), no wrestling in socks, no cut offs or school clothes.
7. If you are injured in any way or don’t feel well, tell a coach IMMEDIATELY. If you are not injured, don’t act like you are...only wresters who WANT to be on the mat should be on the mat. If you have any skin irritations or skin rashes inform the coach immediately. No “sweating down” or unhealthy or aggressive weight loss will be allowed.
8. Parents are encouraged to share with the coaches (before or after practice) ideas for improving the practice, wrestling techniques, etc. During practice, ONLY the head coaches determine what is taught and how practice is structured.
9. During league meets and tournaments parents should not directly approach parents or coaches from other teams or league officials with problems – go through the NCYW coaches.
10. Parents should help clean up the wrestling room after practice including rolling up mats. Parents and wrestlers must leave the wrestling room with whatever they had when they entered. Please make sure you do not leave trash, water bottles, clothes, gym bags, etc. in the wrestling room when practice has ended.
Following the above rules will help to make sure everyone has an enjoyable season. Wrestlers are encouraged to ask questions of the coaches and to ask the coaches for additional help if they want to learn something extra that was not covered in practice. We coaches wrestled as kids too, and still love to talk about and show others our favorite techniques or special moves.
